RochesterCares, a volunteer organization designed to help individuals give back to the community, is here at the Zoo today, along with several other groups, including Upward Bound, an education program through Monroe Community College that provides academic counseling and other necessary services for students to graduate from a Rochester City School District high school.

Volunteers are tackling the many leaves that have collected on Zoo grounds due to the fall season, and we are thrilled with the results! The groups also helped with some work in the Ocelot Exhibit in the Main Building. Many thanks to the work done!

We along with many of our ZooBoo guests celebrated a 33rd birthday for Genny C, one of our African elephants, today! Both her and our other African elephant Lilac got to enjoy their own cake and pumpkins. They must have been hungry, because neither treat lasted long!

Happy Birthday, Genny C!

We are thrilled that The Home Depot stores from Irondequoit, Greece, Henrietta, Gates, Batavia, Penfield/Rochester and Victor have reached out to the Zoo as part of a grant program that provides non-profit organizations with additional resources and manpower to construct projects. They began their series of projects today in the Zoo’s  Main Building, where they are working on the waterfall feature, which is part of several updates to the South American Exhibit.

In total, The Home Depot will donate $6,700 worth of supplies and have 30 to 40 workers come out to construct the other projects, which include adding shelving, tool racks and fencing throughout the Zoo, as well as other small projects that make a big difference for the overall quality of the Zoo.

Another cool project will be the treating and sealing of the eagle carving at the Eagle’s Landing Cafe area; a bench will also be designed to go around the structure. We can’t wait to see the end result!

The Seneca Park Zoo participated in WXXI‘s Open House this past Saturday (October 2). Well known in the community, it attracts about 3,000 people on average, including community members, cultural organizations, families and WXXI members. The free event took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at WXXI Studios on State Street.

We were thrilled to be a part of it and to promote our Trick-or-Treating event, ZooBoo. I had a great time talking with people and heard plenty of costume ideas from parents and children alike that planned to attend. I can’t wait to see all of them.

Were you there? We would love to hear your thoughts on the event and how we did!
