This Saturday, Admiral, one of our North American river otters, will turn 21. That will make him the oldest captive river otter in North America!
Most river otters in the wild live on average up to 8 years, while many river otters in zoos and aquariums live into their mid-teens.
Admiral, who got his name after he used to flip his water dish over and get into it like a boat, will enjoy a birthday party in his honor this Saturday in the ECO Center. A Docent touch table station will be set up from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so that visitors can take a look at different adaptations river otters use to survive in the wild. There will also be a training demo beginning at 1:30 p.m., and a singing of “Happy Birthday” for Admiral at 2 p.m. We hope that you will join us for this special occasion!
